At Call For The Wild, we believe that stories have the power to bring people closer to nature. Stories of kindness, perseverance, and hope can inspire people, young and old, to care about the world we share. That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to one of our amazing conservation partners: Reteti Elephant Sanctuary!
Nestled in Northern Kenya, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a very special place. It’s the first Indigenous, community-owned non-profit elephant sanctuary in the world, and it’s run entirely by the Samburu people who have lived alongside elephants for generations.
At Reteti, the team rescues and cares for baby elephants who have been orphaned or abandoned. Some of these calves have fallen into wells, others have gotten separated from their herds, and many come to Reteti needing comfort, care, and a second chance. The sanctuary’s mission isn’t just to help them heal—it’s to prepare them to return to the wild where they belong.
Taking care of young elephants is a round-the-clock job. The dedicated keepers bottle-feed them every few hours (using goat milk!), take them on daily walks through the bush, and provide the love and attention each one needs to grow strong and confident. The bond between the elephants and their keepers is built on patience, trust, and respect—just like any strong relationship.
One little elephant who has touched many hearts is Long’uro. After surviving a hyena attack that left him without most of his trunk, Long’uro has made an incredible recovery thanks to the gentle and determined care of the Reteti team. His story is just one of many. Each elephant at Reteti has their own journey, and each one is treated with care and compassion until they are ready to return to the wild.
But Reteti is about more than just the elephants. It’s also about people. The sanctuary provides meaningful jobs for the local community and protects the land and wildlife for future generations. It’s a shining example of how people and animals can thrive together when we work with care and purpose.
