At Call For The Wild, we believe protecting wildlife and wild places takes all of us, and that’s why we are so proud to be partnered with The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California. Every year, this incredible organization works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured marine mammals along the California coastline and throughout Hawai‘i. From orphaned seal pups to entangled sea lions and endangered Hawaiian monk seals, MMC’s work represents the very heart of conservation, compassion, and stewardship. Since opening its doors in 1975, The Marine Mammal Center has grown into the largest marine mammal hospital in the world, rescuing and caring for more than 26,000 marine mammals through rescue, rehabilitation, research, and education.
What started as a small group of passionate volunteers working out of a donated facility in Sausalito has grown into a global leader in marine wildlife conservation and ocean health. Every patient that arrives at the Center tells an important story about the state of our oceans, whether it’s a sea lion suffering from toxic algae poisoning, a harbor seal pup separated from its mother, or a Hawaiian monk seal injured by fishing gear. Their work not only helps individual animals recover but also helps scientists better understand the growing challenges facing marine ecosystems around the world.
Over the years, the Center has been a part of some amazing rescue stories. One well known patient, a sea lion named Silent Knight, survived being shot and permanently blinded before being rescued and cared for by The Marine Mammal Center. More recently, the Center helped rescue and rehabilitate Hawaiian monk seal RP92 after he swallowed a dangerous fishing hook, later releasing him safely back into the wild after receiving lifesaving care. Stories like these remind us that while our oceans are facing serious challenges, there is still hope when people choose to care about helping the amazing animals and environments around us. Organizations like The Marine Mammal Center continue to always inspire, educate, and protect, showing all of us how much of a difference we can make when we truly care about helping the wildlife around us.
